Dracula (1931)

Dracula (1931)

5 word summary

Most famous vampire attacks England

When it comes to all the Universal Monsters all of them are classics and influential, and Dracula is no exception. However, I don't feel Dracula is the best of them. Personally I prefer Frankenstein, the Bride of Frankenstein, and the Wolfman, but its still a classic.

Bela Lugosi plays Dracula fantastically. He's so dark and ominous and pulls of the lines and actions better than anyone else I've seen play Dracula. Tod Browning also caught the darkness needed to help with the Gothic feeling of the movie, however I think Coppola also did that well his 1992 version.

The 1931 Dracula I feel is defiantly the best, at least out of the ones I have seen (which isn't that much.) The 1992 Coppola version was too long that it got too boring. Its not the most exciting horror/ suspense film out there so I feel stretching it to over 2 hours was a mistake. Then on the other hand Nosferatu (1922) I also found a little boring and that one wasn't long at all. This version wasn't necessarily better told but somehow was slightly less boring, though it still wasn't highly entertaining.

If you want to see old horror movies obliviously I would suggest this because regardless it is a classic. However I'd first go with Frankenstein or the Wolfman, or even King Kong.

a Bronx Tale (1993)

A Bronx Tale (1993)

5 word Summary

boy learns from local gangster

This film really shows that Robert De Niro isn’t just a great actor, he can also direct. Though this is not his best acting, it is really good (but its hard to beat some of his other roles.) Chazz Palminteri also did a great job on both acting and writing. Lillo Brancato, who played 17 year old Calogero wasn’t a great choice in my opinion. He looked the part and occasionally did alright but for the most part I think his acting was rather poor.

This was a completely different gangster movie than we usually see, from Scorsese or whoever. It still shows the life that gangster live but it is more about living on the edge of becoming a gangster and living a more respectable life. Following a boy who has to decide to follow the foot steps of his father or his role model. It’s deeper than most other movies of the genre as well in some ways. Because it’s dealing with moral issues and more problems than your average gangster might face. Conflicts between Father and other role models, racial issues, peer pressure, and of course, the parking space.

It’s an important film to watch if you are into gangster movies, it gives a new perspective. It is no Godfather, or Goodfellas, but its still and excellent movie.

If you enjoy gangster movies and/or Robert De Niro you should like this one.

The Bicycle Thief (Ladri di Biciclette) (1948)

The Bicycle Thief (Ladri di Biciclette) (1948)

5 word summary

Losing more than a bike

During the Postwar depression in Italy unemployment is high. Antonito Ricci and his family are one of the many effected by this. Ricci finally lands a job hanging up posters but the only way he can have the job is if he has a bicycle. No bike no job. His wife sells some bed sheets to get his bicycle out of a pawn shop. Almost right away a man steals his bicycle while he is hanging a poster. Ricci chases after him but the thief is to fast and Ricci loses him. He tries to tell the police, they care but cant waste time on such a small crime, all they can do is get the bike if he finds it in a pawn shop. He begins a desperate search for his bike, and really his whole life. he knows that if he cannot find it he and his family will starve.

The Bicycle Thief is beautiful in many ways. Directing, cinematography, acting, writing, everything is almost perfect. Its deep and meaningful and thought provoking. There is so much hope and depression together in one film. The bicycle is more than just a bike to Antonito, its his life. Without the bike he can’t work, he can’t eat, or provide for his family at all, without it he can’t live.

****Spoilers****

With how depressing the film is you can’t help but think it’s going to have a happy ending. While it is depressing there’s that sense of hope that makes he think he will find the bike at the end. Near the end when you see Antonito on the corner with his son and he’s looking at the bikes you slowly see the desperation kicking in deep. In which I think is the best 30 seconds (give or take) in the film. The directing and acting in this scene is amazing. Watching him you can feel his desperation getting deeper and deeper, while he paces and looks back and forth between the single bike and the group of bikes.

When he steals the lone bike and makes a run for it everyone chases him down, which unfortunately didn’t happen when his bike was stolen. Dozens of men catch him and hold him until the bike owner comes over. Antonito’s son runs to him crying, the man sees he’s not just some criminal and says to let him go because he has enough problems. All the other men start yelling at Antonito saying he should thank God that he’s not going to jail because that’s where he belongs, and maybe he would prefer that.

As he walks away him and his son are destroyed, crying and holding hands. Antonito grips his sons hand tighter, he knows his life is over… and the film ends.

Its possibly one of the most depressing films I’ve ever seen, up there with Requiem for a Dream.

****end spoilers****

Its so powerful. Anyone who appreciates good old films shouldn’t miss this one. I know many people (especially younger ones) are against watching black and white or even foreign films, and if you skip watching this because of either of these reasons you are a fool.

Almost Heroes (1998)

Almost Heroes (1998)

5 Word Summary

Explorers race Louis and Clark

In early American history two explorers named Louis and Clark attempt to be the first to map a route to the Pacific Ocean. However, Bartholomew Hunt and Leslie Edwards are on their tail. Hunt (Farley), Edwards (Perry) and their men race their way to beat Louis and Clarke. Even squirrels, waterfalls, bears and crazy Spaniards cant stop them.

Honestly I'm at a loss of words with the rating of the film. This is probably my favorite Chris Farley film, even over Tommy Boy (though I’ve seen Tommy Boy tons of times, that might be why.) Now I know its not necessarily well made but its not poorly made by any means. The Performances are hilarious, at least from Farley and Levy and some of the other men, Matthew Perry wasn’t at his best by far but held in there.

Its just one of those adventure comedies that have been done plenty of times but this is just a new version of it. With any film like that (Vacation, Harold and Kumar, Detroit Rock City, ETC) you know its going to be ridiculous and completely unrealistic but that just adds to the humor in my opinion.

It also is one of my favorite movies to quote. There is so many hilarious lines that you can pretty much quote it for as long as the film is itself. “White water in the morning,” “Bent Twig,” “Pittsburg Nellie,” “why don’t you get your own bottle” these are just a few of my favorite lines/scenes, (if you haven’t seen it yet these wont make sense obviously.)

It is for sure a “dumb” comedy for the most part but sometimes that’s more fun.

Id recommend this film to anyone that needs an easy laugh, and of course anyone who loves Chris Farley

The Road (2009)

The Road (2009)

5 word Summary

Family tries to survive disaster

Everything is long gone. Animals, plants, people, almost everything is has died in some sort of disaster. A man and his son are trying to go south in hopes it will be better there, or at least warmer. They walk along roads that are covered with cracks, trees, and cars, hoping to find food and anything else that can help them survive.

However food is not the only thing they have to worry about. Some other people have been able to survive as long as they have but have resorted to cannibalism. The man occasionally has flashbacks to their old life before the disaster and after. He remembers his wife and how much they loved each other before and how she slowly became hateful afterwards.

They two have a pistol, however they only have two bullets left. Which he says are for the two of them. Through flashbacks we learn they are saving the bullets to kill themselves if they are to be captured. The two continue walking toward the coast, with both good and bad luck following them, they try to survive.

The film is one of my favorites of 2009, I had a hard time deciding if this or Up in the Air would have my vote for Picture of the Year. However the Academy robbed this movie of all the awards and/or nominations it deserved. With 10 nominees for best picture it is wrong to not have picked The Road. Also the performances were great, from leading roles played by Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-Mcphee to the supporting roles of Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce and Robert Duval, everyone did fantastic.

The main place where this film was robbed by award shows was Cinematography. It is easily some of my favorite Cinematography work. Everything looks so dark, and gray and dead, yet has such good contrast. The visuals are amazing, every scene where you see them walking, the background looks so bleak yet beautiful and balanced. its hard to imagine it didn’t get nominated.

When I originally read the plot of the film I was worried. The whole thing about cannibalism made me think it was going to be ridiculous and zombie like, with people eating people raw or whatever. The film however was nothing like that. It was much more tastefully done than I had expected, and very realistic.

This movie also has, in my opinion, one of the tensest scenes I’ve seen. But I don’t want to tell you which one.

My only problem with the film is the ending which I find to be a bit of a cop out, or too easy. Not the end I was hoping for, but it didn’t really ruin if for me.

I’d suggest this film to pretty much anyone. Though the Pulitzer Prize winning book is written by the same guy as No Country for Old Men, I wouldn’t say you have to like one to like the other, or will hate one if you hate the other. They’re not alike at all (but I love both)

Critters (1986)

Critters (1986)

5 Word Summary

Furry Aliens Terrorize Small Town

A small town is attacked by small aliens while bounty hunters from outer space try to track them down. The critters start eating people and the bounty hunters take the shape of local people as they try to find them, with the help of townspeople

I found this movie rather boring. After reading what it was about and seeing the genres it was classified as I thought it was going to be like Gremlins, which apparently some people would agree but I wouldn't. It's said to be a comedy but I didn't really find it funny, unlike the bar scene in Gremlins or what have you. It just seemed like an average sci- fi/horror film like a slightly better executed Hobgoblins. It wasn't that original, its kind of what you would expect if man eating aliens would come to a small town.

i thought they did alright with the critters themselves, with how they moved and looked but it wasn't enough for me to really be that entertained. Maybe a decent movie to watch and make fun of (like MST3K) but worth a pass if you are actually looking to see an entertaining film. not really sure how it became a sort of classic. Maybe its just one of those films you had to enjoy when you were younger to enjoy later in life.

Letters From Iwo Jima (2006)

Letters From Iwo Jima

5 word summary

Japanese perspective on legendary battle

Whether its from Flags of Our Fathers, or Sands of Iwo Jima or even from a history class, we’ve all seen or heard the story of the Battle of Iwo Jima, or have we? All the stories up till now had been missing the Japanese view of the battle, and to understand the battle better its an important view to know.

Unlike the Americans who were fighting for an island to help with their strategies against Japan, the Japanese were fighting to protect their land and their honor.

The story follows Japanese soldiers preparing Iwo Jima for the fight they would soon face. We see a young scared husband who is writing to his wife, sharing his fears. We see a General who uses his experience to change the way the Japanese officers control their men and prepare for battle. we see a ruthless Lieutenant who’s will do anything to protect the honor of himself, his men and his country.

It’s a strange new look, Interesting but strange. I knew that the Japanese were big into honor, and dying for their country but this shows it a lot different than I would have imagined. Its also strange to see the Americans as the “bad guys”, not that they were shown in an unfairly evil way as the Japanese are shown in some films, but they were definitely shown in a different light, and that’s very important to understand a war.

The film was great. Not my favorite Eastwood film but it was near the top for sure. I personally prefer it to Flags of Our Fathers, and would say it’s my favorite war film of the 00s even over the Hurt Locker. The acting and directing were fantastic. And cinematography was absolutely gorgeous. Didn’t have the greatest effects in my opinion but it didn’t take away too much.

If you enjoy war films and enjoy Clint Eastwood films this is a must… let me rephrase, if you enjoy films than this is a must

Black Sheep (2006)

Black Sheep (2006)

5 word Summary

Genetically altered sheep eat people.

The 5 word summary really sums up everything, there is not much else to the main story. and strangely I found the movie pretty awesome.

I have problems with horror movies that are completely ridiculous and try to hide that. In the case of Black Sheep, they know exactly how crazy the story is and embrace it and add that touch of comedy that is need in such a movie. As far a horror comedies go I was quite impressed.

The acting wasn’t anything special, nor the directing for that matter, and its hard to judge the writing cause it is so ridiculous that its hard to tell when its bad horror writing and when its good horror comedy writing.

The special effects were surprising. They are actually great for the most part. Also to go with the surprising elements is the cinematography. The picture (color and contrast etc) were actually kind of beautiful, which is funny for such an ugly movie.

I would suggest this film to anyone who enjoys some laughs with their gore. If you enjoy other horror comedies, like evil dead series or especially Dead Snow, don’t miss this crazy fim
